BLUE SHARKS.
BLUE SHARK
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Prionace glauca
DISTRIBUTION: Global
IUCN STATUS: Near threatened
THREATS: Overfishing, use of long line fishing methods.
The blue shark is the most commonly caught species of shark globally, with estimates between 10-20 million individuals annually. The UK hosts seasonal blue sharks, typically arriving sometime in June, and staying until the waters cool down again in late October. We work with academic and private partners to understand the human dynamics of blue shark utilisation in the UK, and use novel in-water methods to study them - including genetics, photogrammetry and machine learning.
